Pumpkins were one of the staples of Native American foods, and were introduced to the early Americans upon their arrival to what would be called the United States of America. In the early days the pumpkins were not only used as a source of food, but were also woven into mats and used for trade. Today pumpkin is the fall spirit which accompanies Halloween and Thanksgiving festivities. Pumpking picking and decorating is the old tradition that was brought to the US with the arrival of the Irish whom had turned turnips into Jack-o-Lanterns for centuries. Pumpkin carved into a Jack-o-Lantern is the real symbol of Halloween, which will impress your friends, neighbors and you're trick-or-treaters.
Always remember that during the Halloween season on Long Island the temperature does tend to be much chillier than the first month of autumn so layer up and do not forget to visit the Melville Haunted house for a good scare.
