Electrical hardware: The greatest technical advances have been made in managing the electrical appliances around your house whether wired or wireless. Consider motion detector lights for the outside or for rooms in which you would like to have light when you enter. Dimmer switches can be used on most regular incandescent bulbs but are more difficult to use on halogen or fluorescent bulbs so read the instructions carefully. Consider also timer switches that allow you to set your lights and appliances to go on and off at certain times. This is useful as a security device, which is useful for keeping people out of your house and also making it safer for your entry. Choosing dimmer switches is between rotary or toggle switch it is probably easier to use. A lot of these electrical light management switches can be added later but why pay twice. Another important consideration is where you want to turn the lights on and off from. You can get three and even four way switches. Beyond this, consult an electrician for your home improvement project. Also consider if you want some of your wall sockets to be switched wall sockets and consider where you want four outlets with two switched and two regular. In any home improvement you need to consider the power requirements for you project. The standard is 15 amps but you should consider 20-amp switch and you should use a twelve-gauge wire rather than a fourteen. In some places you may require a large number of switches such as an exit to the garage where you may have outside lights, garage lights, hallway lights, etc. Don’t worry if you have a place to fit these switches, you can always get then custom ordered. A very convenient switch is one that tells you if the light is on or off. You might also want to consider an electrical device that tells you if your garage door is open or closed. The last thing to consider in electrical hardware and design is the overhead and chandeliers and you may want to plan ahead for these even if you are not going to get them immediately especially if you have an open wall.

Locks: Every internal door probably should have a lock for your own privacy and or your own safety. The locks can all use the same key, but it should be a unique key not like the old fashioned skeleton keys. For safety reasons the exit doors, should never be locked from the inside, incase of a fire.

Hardware for your front and back doors creates one of the first impressions upon entering your home. A few extra dollars in your home improvement budget for a striking lock or door handle can be well worth it. The usual door handle opens on the inside with a switch and opens on the outside with a key and might have a simple locking device as well as a dead bolt. For the highest security, especially when you are away. If you have any glass on the door, this internal latch does not give you much security because the glass can be broken. Thus, for security against intruders, you should have a double deadbolt with keys for both sides of the door or a combination lock on the inside. Be aware that a locked deadbolt on the inside can be a hazard in case of fire, so you should have a key readily accessible to anyone trying to exit the house in an emergency. Another less elegant solution is a dead bolt about of the reach of any children and intruder.

Window locks The ordinary window locks provide very little security and there are very inexpensive locks, which can be added to windows, which make them very secure. Called x. Another solution if you have double hung window is to drill a hole at the intersection of the two windows and place a heavy nail in the hole. This will lock the window. Other windows with gear mechanisms. One window to be especially aware of are the cellar windows, which can be secured in a variety of ways depending on their design and what you use them for. The turn latches are often worthless because a swift kick will push the window right open. The best locks are a double set of slide bolts, which are much harder to kick open.

Picking out hardware. This is not the place to save money. Either in your electrical switches or your door hardware. Look at the quality of the brass coating and consider solid brass even though they are expensive. They can be polished and they can be treated to look bright and beautiful for longer periods of time while brass plate will often wear off and need to be replaced. Good quality electrical switches wont have to be replaced and are less likely to short out. You want use commercial grade even for home improvement projects.

Electrical supply: Plan ahead for future needs when planning you electrical and telecommunication systems. Consult a good electrician on whether or not your current electrical supply is sufficient for current and future use. Electric stove. Dryer, washing machine water heater, electrical base board, other heating units. Outlets for vacuums, power tools for the garage, total electric lighting load. Click here for a form that will help you calculate your electrical needs. The electrical component of any home improvement should be done by a licensed electrician. Be certain that all your outlets are grounded even though many newer appliances are not longer using three pronged plugs and if you have small children consider having ground fault interrupters not only in bathrooms, kitchen, cellar, garage but also in any area where a child might accidentally, play with an outlet.
