There are two basic parts of a septic
system: the septic tank and the cesspool.
The cesspool is the area that provides
soil absorption. Waste flows out of
you home through septic tank lines
and enter near the top of the septic
tank. In a properly functioning septic
tank the organic solids float to the
top of the tank and inorganic solids
sink to the bottom. The bacteria in
the tank should convert the organic
solids to a liquid form. Sludge forms
and settles to the bottom. This process
allows the liquid to flow out of the
septic tank and into the cesspool.
The main cause of failure in a septic
system is the build up of solids in
the tank You can see this presented
in a diagram of a cross-section of
a tank in our Cesspool 101 page on the CDM
Cesspool Services website.
Some other helpful septic
information sources
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) makes their free consumer guide, “A Homeowner’s Guide to Septic Systems” available online in a PDF format for easy download. They include some interesting tips for homeowners with waste disposals, washing machines, etc. And if you a hot tub do not connect it to your septic system. It is likely to overload the tank when the tub is drained causing the solids in the tank to be disrupted and clog the drains.
The Wikipedia is something many people
turn to on the web to find out basic
information including homes, home
improvement, plumbing, landscaping
and other topics related to septic
systems. Their page on the septic
tank defines septic as “the
anaerobic bacterial environment that
develops in the tank and which decomposes
or mineralizes the waste discharged
into the tank.”. Septic tanks
vary in size but typically hold 1,000
to 1,500 gallons. This is the range
common on Long Island. Recent designs
often include two chambers with a
manhole
cover for each.
You will find some useful facts in
a report on Long
Island Groundwater from a Stony
Brook University course on the geologic
development of Long Island. There
are about three million people in
Nassau and Suffolk counties that are
dependent on the groundwater ecology.
Private septic tanks do have a significant
impact on the freshwater quality on
Long Island.
