Port Jefferson is one of the major villages in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County NY. It is one of the major ports on the north shore of Long Island. The deep harbor established Port Jefferson as a center of fishing, ship building and commerce.

It was a major whaling port in mid to late ninetennth century. Port Jefferson Village remains proud of its role as a hsitoric seaport and there are various whaling artifacts in the local parks, museums and tourist attractions.

In the past couple of decades Port Jefferson has made itself into one of the major tourist destinations on Long Island. The village shopping area includes a number of antique shops and upscale boutiques for clothing, jewelry and home decor. There are fine restuarnats and supper clubs that feature live jazz and other popular music.

Port Jefferson is about an hour drive from New York City. It is the last stop on the northern brach of the LIRR. And it is home to the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson ferry. The ferry service runs year round and serves as a major travel link between Long Island and Connecticut. The availabiilty of public transportation makes the vilalge a great day trip destination for residents of New York City and Connecticut.
