Town of Islip
The Township of Islip is located on the South Shore of Long Island. It's in central Suffolk County bordering the Town of Babyon to the west, the Town Smithtown to the north, and the Town of Brookhaven to the east. Like many townships on eastern Long island it is named for a village or town in England because it is the English that first settled this part of New York.
The town is on the Great South Bay and has wonderful ocean beaches, and historic villages and mansions. Fishing and shipping were key to the livelihoods of people in this area for much of the towns history. Clams and oysters were especially significant. One of the most well-known businesses in this industry was the Blue Point Oyster Company. The current economy benefits from the tourism associated with the Great South bay and Fire island.
The Township of Islip includes the villages of Brightwaters, Dunewood, Islandia, Ocean Beach, and Saltaire, and the unincorporated hamlets of bay SHore, Bayport, Baywood, Bohemia, Brentwood, Central Islip, East Islip, Great River, Hauppauge, Holbrook, Holtsville, Islip, Islip Terrace, Oakdale, Ronkonkoma, Sayville, West Bay Shore, West islip, and West Sayville.
